More information on the Supportive Housing Institute in Ohio
In Ohio CSH has hosted Supportive Housing Institutes annually since 2007. Since then, 36 teams from urban and rural communities across Ohio have graduated. Teams have come from Cincinnati to Painesville, from Athens to Toledo. Teams included representatives of mental health boards, housing developers, landlords, service providers, property managers, and housing authorities. Project sizes being pursued ranged from as few as 8 units to 100 units. Projects targeted chronically homeless dual diagnosed adults to youth aging out to those with severe and persistent mental illness.
The Supportive Housing Institutes wrap up with team-project presentations to a panel of potential funders. The panel has included the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, PNC Bank, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing, National Affordable Housing Trust, the City of Columbus, and the State of Ohio. The State was well represented by the Departments of Mental Health, Rehabilitation and Correction, Development, Jobs and Family Services, Youth Services, and Aging.
In addition to the class room sessions, teams were given the opportunity to tour operational supportive housing projects, which included Sunshine Terrace, the Commons at Chantry, and the Commons at Grant, in Columbus. CSH also sponsored a two day site visit to supportive housing projects in rural Michigan. Institute teams reported the interaction with the provider staff, tenants and funders of these projects valuable and enlightening. Most stated they came away from the site visits energized about their own projects.
CSH recognizes that supportive housing requires a broad spectrum of skills and experiences for successful development and operations. Therefore, we strive to integrate this spectrum in the teaching of the 10 modules. See a partial list of experts utilized in the Institutes.
