Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Race equity is at the heart of our work to advance supportive housing, and we recognize that to be effective, we must exemplify equity internally. From our Strategic Plan to our race equity framework, we are working to apply equitable and race-conscious practices, policies, competencies, and standards to build a dynamic culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We are moving toward a place where equity is centered as part of job descriptions, staff orientation, performance reviews, and ongoing staff development, and where racial equity is woven deliberately into our signature initiatives and programs.

To implement the framework and operationalize our race equity goals, CSH established an internal working group called the Race Equity Design & Implementation Team (REDIT). REDIT is a collective of CSH staff from diverse geographies, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and positions. The team consists of seven committees based on our levers for transformative change. Through rotating participation in REDIT, CSH expects that all employees will have an opportunity to participate and contribute.

Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law

CSH is committed to a policy of equal treatment and opportunity in every aspect of its relations with employees and prospective employees. Likewise, we want to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace. We will not discriminate against applicants for employment because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, disability, marital status, sex, or sexual orientation. We encourage employment applications from individuals who represent the culturally and ethnically diverse communities we serve, including those with lived experience of homelessness, housing instability, and engagement with public systems.

Applicants to open positions and employees of most private employers, state and local governments, educational institutions, employment agencies, and labor organizations are protected under Federal law from discrimination. What is the application process at CSH?

It is important for candidates to review the job posting carefully and tailor their resume and cover letter to reflect, and highlight, why they feel they are a fit for a particular opportunity.

After applying, candidates will receive an auto-generated email to confirm that CSH received the application and will review it. Due to the volume of applications, CSH will only contact candidates who will move forward to the next step. Candidates who do not move forward will receive an automated notice once the position is filled. (Please check your spam folder for any auto-response messages from CSH as sometimes email clients, like Gmail or Outlook, move automated emails to spam).

A wide range of staff, including human resources, hiring managers, and interviewers, review candidate applications. Applicants considered a good match for the position will be contacted to schedule an initial phone interview.

May I apply for more than one opportunity that fits my experience?

Yes, you may. Once you create a profile in our applicant tracking system, you can apply for other opportunities where you might be a good fit.

Do I need to submit a cover letter?

CSH recommends that candidates submit a cover letter. A cover letter can help candidates stand out, particularly if their resume does not capture the depth of experience and specific skills or job experience required for a role. It also demonstrates to the hiring manager that the candidate took the time to read through the job description and can describe why they are interested in that specific position.

How long does it take for my application to be reviewed?

It varies, but typically applications are reviewed within two weeks of being submitted.

If a hiring manager is interested in my application, what happens next?

Our interview process is as follows:

1. Phone Interview: The next step would be an initial phone interview. HR or a hiring manager will contact applicants to schedule a phone interview. This conversation is typically a thirty-minute phone call and an opportunity for the candidate to learn more about the position.

2. Panel Interview: If CSH moves forward with your application, the next step is a video interview with a panel of employees. During a panel interview, candidates usually meet with three to four interviewers for 60 minutes via Microsoft Teams (video conferencing). A representative from our HR team will contact candidates to schedule the panel interview.

3. Second Panel Interview or Assignment: If CSH decides to move forward with candidates after the first panel interview, there may be a second panel interview and/or a relevant assignment.

What occurs during a panel interview?

Interviews are typically sixty-minutes of Q&A conversations. Our goal during interviews is to better understand candidates’ skills and experiences and how they can contribute their skills and passions to CSH.

How can I best prepare for my interview?

We are interested in getting to know more about candidates’ interests and experience in the role and their passion for the work of CSH. While no specific preparation is required, candidates should familiarize themselves with our programs and services by visiting our website: www.csh.org. If there are specific preparations or assignments, HR will inform candidates in advance.

What happens if my application does not proceed after a phone or a panel interview?

HR will notify candidates by email if CSH decides not to proceed with their application. If there are other opportunities where candidates meet the qualifications, they may be considered for those positions.

What happens after the interview(s)?

For candidates considered for hiring, CSH will request three or more professional references.

CSH Culture

Our employees are part of 1CSH, which fosters a sense of community and a culture that builds trust, drives equality, creates belonging, and promotes inclusivity. During the COVID-19 health emergency, our leadership and Board of directors prioritized staff’s health and well-being. To that end, most roles offer flexible and hybrid work arrangements to accommodate our employees’ needs and personal obligations. While remote work can seem isolating, CSH hosts bi-monthly all-staff calls, regional or team retreats, biennial in-person all staff retreats, and employee-led committees to keep our national staff connected. The employee-led committees empower our teams to build a 1CSH culture that works for everyone. Some of our committees include:

  • Data Governance Committee
  • Geographic Leads
  • Internal Project Review Committee (IPRC)
  • Pension Committee
  • Policy Group
  • Race Equity Design & Implementation Team (REDIT)
